Governor Scott Signs $5 Million Claims Bill for Child Sexually Abused by Foster Boy Living in the Home

On Friday, March 23, 2018, Governor Rick Scott signed CS/HB 6509, a claims bill that directs the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) to pay more than $5 million awarded by a Florida jury to C.M.H., a victim of sexual abuse by a child in foster care. This marks the largest known recovery in Florida for one child who was emotionally and sexually abused against a governmental defendant, DCF. Children’s rights attorney Howard Talenfeld served as co-counsel for C.M.H.

Disabled children who have physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, and mental health-related issues are in need of critical attention and specialized representation. Justice for Kids brings its unique and proven approach to the representation of these children who are eligible for governmental benefits, whose services are being cut and others who have been abused by the state child welfare system.

Our team’s lawsuits and advocacy have has led to widespread reforms and awareness. Howard helped raise public attention to the then-common practice of prescribing “psychotropic cocktails” of powerful anti-psychotic medications to young children and foster children in state-contracted settings. He brought a wrongful death lawsuit after a 12-year-old Autistic boy died from being given multiple psychotropic medications with no monitoring or supervision in a dangerous, off-label practice without parental consent.

Florida’s Premiere Youth Advocacy Organization Brings Celebrity Chef Experience To Its Supporters For An Evening To Benefit Kids In And Aging Out Of Foster Care

Published

on

Florida’s Children First (FCF), an award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the rights of at–risk children and youth in the foster care system, is hosting Cooking for the Kids with Chef Rome on March 10, 2021 at 6 p.m. This virtual event will feature a cooking demonstration with Chef Rome and his celebrity pals in the sports and showbiz world. It also provides a safe venue for FCF to raise critical funds that support their mission of helping kids in and aging out of foster care, many of whom have been dramatically impacted by the pandemic.

Jerome Brown, better known as Chef Rome, is a personal chef to stars from Shaquille O’Neal and Cam Newton to Nancy Kerrigan and Colin Powell. He’s also a Food Network favorite, a restaurateur, and a mentor to kids.

“While cooking really isn’t MY thing, helping kids DEFINITELY is. Kids are our doctors, nurses, NBA players and top chefs of the future – so we MUST help them achieve all they can – ESPECIALLY our most vulnerable youth: those in foster care,” said Brevin Knight, NBA Point Guard and ESPN commentator.  “That’s why I’m joining Chef Rome and Florida’s Children First’s Cooking for the Kids. It will be great fun, for a great cause.”

Cooking for the Kids puts attendees right in the kitchen with Chef Rome and his famous friends where he will do a short cooking demo, answer questions, and share why he supports the work of Florida’s Children First.

“Whether you enjoy cooking or just enjoy great conversation, this event is for everyone. Your attendance supports our mission to help youth in foster care and you can enjoy a celebrity chef experience from the comfort and safety of your home,” said FCF Board President and founder Howard Talenfeld, who serves as Business Unit Leader of the Justice for Kids Division of Kelley Kronenberg. “We invite you to cook along or simply watch and learn.”

“We are thrilled to have Chef Rome give our Florida Youth SHINE kids an opportunity to learn cooking traditions and healthy eating tips,” said Christina Spudeas, Executive Director of Florida’s Children First. “Your support enables us to provide cookbooks for Florida Youth SHINE members who often don’t have family to provide guidance and experience in preparing meals on their own.”

Cooking for the Kids is generously underwritten by statewide sponsors that include Kelley Kronenberg (Statewide Presenting Sponsor), The Shane McGee Foundation, Guardian Trust, The Florida Bar Foundation, The Paul Palank Memorial Foundation, and Event Presenter: Stuart Building Products.

“As the pandemic continues, we must not forget those who need our help now more than ever,” notes Heath Eskalyo, Principal Partner/Chief Financial Officer of Kelley Kronenberg. “I hope you will join us for this fun event that will truly make a difference in the lives of Florida’s youth in foster care.”

Florida’s Children First Invites Supporters to Virtually Escape to Napa: State Attorney’s Office Communications Officer Grayson Kamm to Emcee

FLORIDA’S PREMIERE YOUTH ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION OFFERS A UNIQUE WAY FOR TAMPA BAY AREA PATRONS TO SIP, SUPPORT OR SAY “THANK YOU” WITH A SPECIAL GIFT THAT SUPPORTS THEIR CRITICAL WORK

Tampa, Fla. – Florida’s Children First (FCF), an award-winning nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the rights of at-risk children and youth in the foster care system, is hosting the CHILL Virtual Wine Tasting fundraiser on Thursday, December 3, 2020 from 6 to 7 p.m. As part of its annual Greater Tampa Bay area fundraiser, patrons will enjoy a safe, socially distanced and fun way to “escape” from their local surroundings for a bit, while affording FCF the opportunity to raise funds and educate supporters on their mission of helping kids in and aging out of foster care.

“Innovation and impact have been a hallmark of our organization this past year and we cannot wait to share our progress with supporters and the community,” said Robin Rosenberg, FCF Deputy Director. “We’d rather be in person, but we’re bringing that same innovation to this event. By partnering with a team of talented Napa wine experts, participants will enjoy and learn about fine wines while also learning more about the important work we do, as we celebrate the season together virtually.”

Grayson Kamm, a former local news reporter and current Chief Communications Officer at the State Attorney’s Office, will serve as the evening’s Emcee. “I have hosted FCF’s annual fundraiser events for years and seen first-hand the tremendous impact the organization has had on the lives of thousands of our most vulnerable children. I am thrilled that we will be able to toast to their achievements once again.”

During this unique fundraising event, participants will “escape to Napa” as renowned master wine expert Gillian Ballance explains the featured wines, what makes them special, how to best complement each one, and much more. Participants can choose from a variety of premium wines from Napa’s celebrated wine region, which will be shipped directly to their homes. For those who want to support but not savor, the wine packages can also be gifted and shipped to others or sent as year-end corporate or holiday gifts. “A package of wine directly from Napa that also supports a nonprofit is a truly unique gift,” adds Rosenberg.

“Everyone, particularly those in or aging out of the foster care system, have endured some very trying months. But all of us, especially the youth in foster care we serve, have shown tremendous resilience,” said FCF Board President and founder Howard Talenfeld, who serves as Co-Business Unit Leader of the Justice for Kids Division of Kelley Kronenberg. “This event provides an outlet to gather together, “CHILL” out, and celebrate amazing accomplishments and people with the Greater Tampa Bay community.”

One of the featured guests will be former foster youth Kenisha Anthony who will share how FCF’s youth advocacy and empowerment organization, Florida Youth SHINE, helped her transition from being an abandoned child of drug-addicted parents to an accomplished young woman and newly published author of “LABELED: Ward of the State.”

CHILL is generously underwritten by sponsors that include FCF Statewide Presenting Sponsor Kelley Kronenberg; and Statewide Sponsors: The Florida Bar Foundation, The Guardian Trust, The Paul Palank Memorial Foundation, and The Shane McGee Foundation.

“As we end a challenging year and begin the holiday season, what better way to celebrate than a virtual trip to Napa that also supports our society’s most vulnerable kids,” notes Heath Eskalyo, Principal Partner/Chief Financial Officer of Kelley Kronenberg. “At a time when we are all facing unprecedented challenges, youth in state care need our support now more than ever. We hope you will join us in supporting FCF on December 3.”

For more information about Florida’s Children First or the CHILL fundraiser and the packages available, please visit www.FloridasChildrenFirst.org. It is recommended to place wine orders by November 17 to ensure delivery by the event date.
