The presentation focused on the current and evolving issues of fraud within organizations. The seminar covered types of fraud, data mining, analysis and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Participants learned about the current tools that are being used in litigation and forensic accounting matters. They learned to recognize alternatives to traditional methods of dealing with large and complex data in litigation and internal investigations.

The definition of forensic is “suitable for use in a court of law”. So literally, forensic accounting means accounting suitable for use in court. However, Fiske and Gilden emphasized that forensic accounting goes beyond just engagements resulting from actual or anticipated litigation.

“Forensic accounting can encompass economic damages calculations, accounting related to bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, money laundering, professional negligence claims, marital and family law and fraud,” said Fiske. “Forensic accounting can go far beyond accounting for use in court which is why I like a different definition: the art and science of investigating people and money.”

Gilden added, “What we do isn’t just a science. It isn’t just about technical knowledge and dealing with dollars and cents. Sometimes dealing with situations and clients is more art than science, and the people involved are just as pertinent as the numbers.”

One of the best data sources about fraud that much of Fiske and Company’s research came from is the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The ACFE published the first Report to the Nation on Occupational Fraud and Abuse in 1996. The ACFE’s research on these topics for over 20 years illuminates trends in how fraud is committed, how it is detected and how organizations combat the threat.
